Bikes for Books

Reading is one of the most important things that we can give to our children. Teachers believe that reading can lead to a lifetime of achievements. The Michigan Masons sponsor a program called Bikes for Books. This effort helps encourage reading in children who are in grades 3-5.

The Bikes for Books Program is a reading incentive program between Masonic Lodges and the local schools and community. Students who successfully achieve the reading goals will have an opportunity to be awarded a bike and a helmet. The Bikes for Books Program is the fastest growing community program with $90,000 in combined expenditures between Masonic Lodges and the Michigan Masonic Charitable Foundation’s Community Charities Program over the past six years.

Bikes for Books Program Handbook

As your lodge considers participating in the Bikes for Books Program allow yourself the luxury to start small. Maybe only decide to provide one bike and helmet to one boy and girl in one class. This will allow you to get used to working on the program and gaining confidence and momentum for the ensuing years.
